Vision & Mission

Our Vision, Mission, Principles and Method – all in one place.

Vision

“By 2034, Bharat Scouts and Guides will become the leading educational movement for youth participation, embracing diversity and inclusion, providing a safe environment for its members, and continuing to grow with good governance and responsiveness to present circumstances.”

Mission: Fundamentals

Definition

“Bharat Scouts and Guides is a voluntary, non-political educational movement for young people, open to all without distinction of origin, race or creed, in accordance with the purpose, principles and method conceived by the Founder Lord Baden-Powell in 1907.”

The voluntary nature of Scouting and Guiding means that members join the movement of their own free will, and remain because they accept its fundamental principles.

Purpose

To contribute to the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual potentials, so that they can:

  • develop their full capacities,
  • become responsible citizens,
  • be responsible members of their local community,
  • be responsible citizens of the nation, and
  • be active and responsible members of the international community.

A person is first of all an independent individual, part of a community, which is in turn part of a wider political structure such as a district, province or state, expressed as a sovereign nation. A responsible citizen must be aware of their rights and duties towards each of these communities.

Principles

Principles are the fundamental laws and beliefs that must be followed to achieve the purpose. They form a code of conduct that defines the behaviour and life of every member. Scouting and Guiding rest on three broad principles.

Duty to God

Adherence to spiritual principles, loyalty to the religion that expresses them, and acceptance of the duties resulting from it.

Duty to Others

Loyalty to one’s country in harmony with promoting local, national and international peace, understanding and cooperation; participation in the development of society, with recognition and respect for the dignity of fellow human beings and the integrity of the natural world.

The first step is to build peace and goodwill within our own country. Boys and girls should be trained from youth to make these a habit of life, ending jealousy between cities, classes and communities, and extending the same spirit to neighbouring countries and the world.

Duty to Self

Every individual should accept responsibility for developing their own potentials. This matches the educational aim of the movement, which helps the “unfolding” of a young person’s personality. The Promise and the Law play a vital role in this.

The Method

The Method of Scouting and Guiding is a system of progressive self-education, made up of these key elements:

Promise and Law

Builds good character, responsibility and moral values in young people.

Learning by Doing

Young people learn not just by being taught, but by acting and gaining experience themselves.

Membership of Small Groups

Working in small groups under adult guidance, young people progressively gain the opportunity to:

  • discover new things
  • accept responsibility
  • receive training
  • move towards self-government
  • develop character
  • gain competence
  • become self-reliant
  • build trustworthiness
  • learn to cooperate
  • develop leadership

Progressive and Stimulating Programmes

Activities based on participants’ interests, most of them in the open air and close to nature:

  • games
  • useful skills
  • community service
  • creative activities
